Icemule Classic -Watch overview
If you want your things to remain super cold, don’t ignore the basic norm to cool the bag with ice overnight before the day you want to use it. We used a pitcher of ice in this Icemule backpack cooler bag, and kept this bag in another cooler with ice. It works seamlessly every time we super cool the bag before its use.
The Only suggestion from our team is to attach a few more rings/ hooks on the outside of the bag to have more places to attach tie down hooks or bottle openers.
Is Icemule cooler bag worth buying?
There are other soft coolers in the market that are expensive and out of the budget for most of the customers. And most of the time it is not just about the budget but willingness of the buyer to invest in $200 plus in a soft cooler.
Icemule has capitalized on this situation here and made a big market for the Dry Bag like soft coolers that are stylish and also act as a duffle bag on your trip. They keep ice and foods cold for 24 hours as advertised and there are no water leaks and they don’t even sweat. Its price range of $40 to $69 allows buyers to buy multiple Icemule bags fitting their different purposes.
Build quality and Design-
Is icemule backpack cooler bag strong enough?
Interior and exterior materials of the Icemule backpack cooler bags seem very tough. Fabric is sturdy, and it looks like all the straps, buckles are made to last longer. Strap is super comfortable to carry on your shoulder; the material is a high quality, and it is made to last longer. It is lightweight, durable, has a tough interior layer and still has good insulation capabilities.
With the zipperless design, this cooler bag is very easy to close and open.
What is the ice retention of icemule backpack cooler bag?
24 Hours.
Icemule backpack cooler bags have ice retention period of up to 28 hours, if cooler bag was pre-chilled and not opened regularly. Company claims to have an ice retention period of 24 hours. but it is valid only for solid-cubed ice with a 2:1 ice-to-can ratio. It is fair to say that frozen ice packs will more than likely not stay cold for a 24 hours period.
If you want to keep things cold for longer, avoid opening it frequently. It will surely keep your stuff cold all day, but you cannot expect to have a solid ice for 24 hours or more, chilling this cooler overnight by filling in some Ice, and keeping sandwiches and food stuffs frozen overnight will always increase the Ice retention period. This is obviously true with any type of coolers that you may get in the market.

Tests performed on the Icemule cooler bags
We peroformed ice retention tests on all of the variants of icemule backpack cooler bags. For the tests performed with the Larger Icemule backpack cooler bag, Ice to can ratio was random so these tests might not be comparable to the claims by Icemule. We filled up the available space with ice once beer cans were filled in.
We filled in 18 cans of beer and some solid ice, securely closed the cooler, blew some air into the Air Barrier and left it out in the direct sun, it was probably above 100 that day since I live in Houston, Texas and it was summer time. After 24 hours, there was no ice left, but water and beer were pretty cold.
some more tests
On another day, I went on a day trip to Galveston, (Galveston is a beach at a 1.5 hrs of a drive from Downtown Houston), I had started at 7:00 am and put in 18 refrigerated cold beer cans and a 7 lb bag of ice. Temperature was around 85 degrees and I had to open the bag quite often throughout the day, I could manage to keep the bag in the car for most of the time, at the time of leaving around 7:00 p.m. the Icemule cooler bag still had a very cold ice and water mix, no leaking or condensation and it was pretty humid that day.
Once done it was as quick as dumping the ice, rolling it up, packing it and you are ready to head back. It was a little heavy at its full capacity, but I didn’t have any issues carrying it. With the comfortable straps it easily stays on your shoulder. This is by far not something you can do with a hard cooler from the big brands out there.
Can Icemule backpack cooler bag be used for storing breastmilk?
For a day trip, yes. Icemule backpack cooler bag is useful for 24 hours when you follow the ice retention guidelines. It is definitely not recommended to store breastmilk for anything more than 24 hours. If you are going on 5-6 hours of a flight and need to store super cold or Frozen Breast milk, Icemule Cooler bags are best for the purpose.
What is an Air barrier in icemule cooler bag?
In an icemule backpack cooler bag, by blowing an air into the bag, you create a passage of air between the layer that is holding ice inside and the layer which is exposed to the sun. When you blow air into the air barrier nozzle, it leaves the inner bag containing the ice literally hanging in mid-air separated by the outer layer of the bag; even the bottom part of the bag does not touch the ground. This is a brilliant idea to keep cold things inside the bag away from heat and increase the insulation property of Icemule cooler bags.
When we tested Icemule backpack cooler bags with the use of air barrier feature, after about 8 hours in 84-degree temperature outside, it had lost just 20% of the Ice. After spending 24 hours outside, things inside were still cold and had Ice water mix left.
